Bass Guitars

Choosing a bass starts with three questions: what scale length feels right, how many strings you need, and which pickups give the sound you are after. Most basses use a 34-inch long scale; shorter-scale models reduce the reach to the first frets, which many younger or smaller-handed players find easier. Four strings cover most styles; a fifth, lower string adds range for heavier or modern music. Pickup layout shapes the tone. A split-coil Precision-style pickup gives a round, punchy sound, Jazz-style single-coils are brighter and more focused, and a PJ combination lets you blend both. Acoustic basses with a built-in pickup suit unplugged sessions and small gigs. For a first bass, look for a comfortable neck, reliable tuners and a solid bridge before worrying about exotic woods. Pair it with a practice amp or headphone amp and a tuner, and check the specifications on each product page before you buy.
