Violins come in fractional sizes so that young players can hold them comfortably, from 1/8 and 1/4 for small children through 1/2 and 3/4 to full size (4/4). A teacher can measure arm length to confirm the right size. An outfit is the simplest way to start, combining the violin with a bow, case and usually rosin. Student instruments are typically made with a carved spruce front and maple back, with ebony or hardwood fittings; step-up and advanced instruments use finer tonewoods and craftsmanship for a richer, more responsive sound. Some higher-grade violins are sold without a case and bow, so check what is included. Electric violins suit amplified performance and quiet practice through headphones.
