Ukuleles come in four main sizes, and size changes both sound and comfort. The soprano is the smallest and has the classic bright ukulele sound; the concert is slightly larger with more room between frets; the tenor is fuller and louder, and is a favourite with performers; and the baritone is tuned like the top four strings of a guitar. For children and first-time players, a soprano or concert is a sensible starting point. Look at what the instrument is made from: laminate bodies are durable and affordable, while solid tops tend to sound richer as they are played. Some models add a cutaway and a built-in pickup with EQ so you can plug into an amp. Many ukuleles include a gig bag; a clip-on tuner and spare strings are worthwhile additions.
