An electronic drum kit lets you practise at a volume that suits your home: through headphones for late-night sessions, or through an amp when you want the room to hear it. The main choices are pad type, kit size and the sound module. Mesh heads feel closer to an acoustic drum and are quieter to hit than rubber pads; dual-zone pads add rim sounds; and a cymbal with a choke function can be stopped by hand, as on a real kit. Count the pieces you need. A compact five- or seven-piece setup suits a beginner, while larger kits add extra toms and cymbals. For a desk or a small bedroom, a tabletop pad kit with foot pedals takes up far less space. Check what each module offers: preset kits, a metronome, coaching or recording functions and a headphone output are all useful for learning. Add a throne, sticks and headphones if they are not included, and you are ready to play.
